Promoting Campus Ministry at PW Gathering

Earlier this year, PCM of Georgia had the opportunity to promote our many different campus ministries at the Annual PW Spring Gathering. We were given space to have a booth, answer questions about campus ministry, and encourage members of PW to join with us in prayer, financial support, and providing us with names of college students whom we might be in contact with. The booth, pictured below, was put together by Emory’s Campus Minister, Rev. Jill P. Tolbert. Joining her that day to promote Campus Ministry was Sheri Grove, Berry’s Campus Minister.

We celebrated Earth Day by watching a dirty movie with the atheists

This past Thursday was Earth Day, and we used this special opportunity to forge new and unlikely bonds of fellowship. Jews, Catholics, Atheists, Episcopalians and Pagans converged at the Presbyterian Student Center to join us for a special Earth Day screening of a documentary called “Dirt! The Movie.” This film uses humor, science, and a very human touch to give audiences the dirt on dirt, and explain how soil is surprisingly central to many of the issues we face as a global community. A rousing interfaith roundtable discussion followed the screening, as students and community members from diverse faith (and non-faith) traditions wrestled together with some of the tough questions this film brought to our attention. Special thanks to third-year Ecology major and PSC regular Calley Mersmann for helping to make this night of interfaith dialogue a smashing success.

While there are devotionals for every day of the year, their Lenten series is called Journey to the Cross. Try it out between now and Easter. Let us know what you think.

Higher Education Sunday

Will your congregation be saying farewell to students heading off to college this fall while welcoming new and returning students to your community? Timing is everything. Sometimes, even the simplest little thing can make all the difference in the world, if it happens at the right time. So in concurrence with Higher Education Sunday, we would like to provde you with these resources, and encourage you to take advantage of this timely opportunity to recognize those students who will be heading off to college in the next couple of weeks, and remind your congregation of the baptismal covenant we make with them as they go, and as we welcome new and returning students into our communities.

There a number of ways you can honor your students who are leaving for college or graduate school and welcome new and returning students to your community of faith. If you happen to know of a student heading off to a school in Georgia this fall, we have a wonderful new Referral Form on our website that you can use to connect them with one of our existing Campus Ministries. And if your student is going somewhere out of state, they can also check out pcusacollege.org.

Welcoming Students into a Congregation

New students will start arriving on campus this month. Those students will begin to settle into their dorms or apartments and will start to get adjusted to campus life. We urge congregations close to campuses to issue a special invitation to students to join your fellowship while they are on campus.

Acts of welcome and support for college students might include:

A breakfast or luncheon some Sunday early in the semester, to which students are sent personal invitations.
Inclusion of students and staff in the leadership of worship that Sunday.
Circulation of invitations and opportunity to sign up for an adopt-a-student program, matching students and church member-hosts for the remainder of the year.
A reception at which the church’s outreach to and mission opportunities for students are presented, and the category of affiliate membership is explained.
Invitation to be added to the church’s mailing list.
Help incoming and returning students move-in. Provide care packages include your church information and offer rides to church activities including worship.

PCM Statewide Fall Retreat

Life, for most of us, feels like a movie we’ve arrived to forty minutes late.

Sure, good things happen, sometimes beautiful things. But tragic things happen, too. What does it mean? We find ourselves in the middle of a story that is sometimes wonderful, sometimes awful, usually a confusing mixture of both, and we haven’t a clue how to make sense of it all. No wonder we keep losing heart.

We need to know the rest of the story.

For when we were born, we were born into the midst of a great story begun before the dawn of time. A story of adventure, of risk and loss, heroism, …and betrayal. A story where good is warring against evil, danger lurks around every corner, and glorious deeds wait to be done. Think of all those stories you’ve ever loved – there’s a reason they stirred your heart. They’ve been trying to tell you about the true Epic ever since you were young.

There is a Larger Story. And you have a crucial role to play.

Q1|09: Commissioners Meeting

Our next meeting is coming up Saturday, February 7th, 2009. We will be meeting at the Westminster Christian Fellowship building at Georgia Tech from 10:00 to 2:00. Now is the time to remind yourself of tasks that you took on at our last meeting. More information coming.

LUKE 2:6-7. "And while they were there, the time came for her to give birth. And she gave birth to her firstborn son and wrapped him in swaddling cloths and laid him in a manger, because there was no place for them in the inn."

WCF (Westminster Christian Fellowship) at Georgia Tech recently partnered with PSF (Presbyterian Student Fellowship) at Auburn University in the city of Atlanta for a homeless outreach event.

They used video footage from that event to create their own expression of “Outrageous Generosity” – the theme of the 2009 College Conference at Montreat. The video will be featured on the 2009 College Conference Blog soon. Check it out!

Each Advent is an opportunity to explore once again our relationship with God and to prepare a place in our hearts for Jesus, the Son of God. There are many helpful methods out there to help us explore our relationship with God, one of them is through the use of a devotional.
